Copyrights and the balance of freedom E-mail
Friday, 23 July 2004
The Senate is considering a bill that makes 'intentionally inducing' a copyright violation the same as commiting the violation. The EFF's action center already presents a well reasoned opposition letter you can send to your senator with a few clicks. Wired also comments on the chilling effect that could result from this law.Write Comment (0 Comments)

Gentoo and the 386 rice burner E-mail

Gentoo is now (according to Netcraft) the fastest growing linux distribution. Many moons ago I blogged about Gentoo and suggested that the gentoo cultural obsession with compiling for the purposes of optimization was largely a waste of time. In fact, I now wonder if all that compiling isn't wasting more CPU cycles than are being saved by the resulting optimizations.

This sarcastic take on the Gentoo culture is an enjoyable read for anyone nerdy enough to get the humor but still in touch with reality.

All kidding aside, I think Gentoo is a great distribution. Many features of the package management system, portage, are already being integrated into other distros and the flexability of the distribution does allow Gentoo to shine in specialized uses. But like I said before, optimize last! Your time is scarce, not the computer's.Write Comment (0 Comments)

Farenheit 9/11 - A great way to celebrate our freedom E-mail
Monday, 05 July 2004
What a better way to celebrate the 4th of July and the freedom it represents than to go see a movie possible only because of those freedoms.

The theater was over half full (even at 5pm on a holiday!) and the audience applauded several times during the movie and a strong round of applause errupted at the end. Even Michael Moore is beside himself at the success of this movie.

I just hope some people who walked in intending to vote for Bush walked out intending to vote for anyone but Bush.Write Comment (0 Comments)

More evidence more freedom leads to more choices E-mail

Skolelinux is a great distribution of linux that went to version 1.0 while I was away. It can be installed by answering three questions and makes things like roaming users and thin clients a snap.Write Comment (0 Comments)

Trek Fever E-mail

And I thought I was nuts for going to a Star Trek conference. These guys have taken it to a whole new level and are producing a series that picks up where Kirk and Spock left off!Write Comment (0 Comments)
