Gentoo is now (according to Netcraft) the fastest growing linux distribution. Many moons ago I blogged about Gentoo and suggested that the gentoo cultural obsession with compiling for the purposes of optimization was largely a waste of time. In fact, I now wonder if all that compiling isn't wasting more CPU cycles than are being saved by the resulting optimizations.
This sarcastic take on the Gentoo culture is an enjoyable read for anyone nerdy enough to get the humor but still in touch with reality.
All kidding aside, I think Gentoo is a great distribution. Many features of the package management system, portage, are already being integrated into other distros and the flexability of the distribution does allow Gentoo to shine in specialized uses. But like I said before, optimize last! Your time is scarce, not the computer's.Write Comment (0 Comments) |
