SCO filed a lawsuit a while back for damages of $3 Billion against IBM for misappropriation of SCO's intellectual property in Linux. SCO claims significant portions of their version of UNIX were copied, line for line, into the Linux kernel.
The claims and the damages are outrageous. SCO is a sinking ship using Enron inspired imagination to dream up ways to stay afloat.
I've intended to blog about this topic for a while but the whole issue has been so frought with posturing and speculation it's hard to say anything certain about the situation. Today, RedHat filed a brilliant and concise complaint against SCO and SCO published a response.
RedHat did an excellent job of summarizing the insanity of SCO's claims and their questionable tactics. They have bordered on extortion, asking Linux users to pay license fees now or pay more later after legal action.
Whether their claims are bogus or not, it seems to have convinced investors there is a future payout. Their stock price has soared since this all began.
