Mambo, Monkeys, and MBAs, oh my! Print E-mail
Monday, 13 June 2005
I (finally) graduated from business school on May 13th. All the festivities, especially the margarita machine we rented for the party, have kept me away from Blog Ho! Much to my surprise, and applause, the graduation speeches were quite challenging, not the usual whitewashed feel good stuff.

A popular graduation gift was gift certificates to Barnes and Noble. One location around here has a particularly good selection of computer magazines and often carries Linux periodicals from overseas. I came across this article highlighting four open source content management systems. I'm considering a move to Mambo. PostNuke is ok, but I've often been frustrated by the difficulty of changing the design and layout with templates and the documentation is awful. Mambo appears to be more flexible and has a larger development and user community.

In any case, the upgrade will have to wait until July. I'm leaving on Wednesday for Brazil! My friend Adam is getting married in Rio. After that we're headed to Manaus to see the Amazon and then to Iguassu. I'm hoping to get some great photos!

A lot of interesting things have been going on in the OpenSource world. A free, open source, virtual server technology is becoming viable in the form of Xen. It comes ready to go out of the box in Suse 9.3 and it looks fairly easy to setup for Fedora. There appears to be a rebirth of JavaScript going on these days. People have been inspired by what Google has done with JavaScript in gmail and Google Maps. The general idea is to make a website work more like a desktop application using javascript. SAJAX is a good example. The proliferation of Linux "Live" distros for various purposes is astounding. This article highlights several great security related packages.
