Linux inventor, Linus Torvalds, is quoted by the New York Times Magazine as saying:
"When you have people who hook up these machines that weren't designed for the Internet, and they don't even want to know about all the intricacies of network security, what can you expect? We get what we have now: a system that can be brought down by a teenager with too much time on his hands. Should we blame the teenager? Sure, we can point the finger at him and say, 'Bad boy!' and slap him for it. Will that actually fix anything? No. The next geeky kid frustrated about not getting a date on Saturday night will come along and do the same thing without really understanding the consequences. So either we should make it a law that all geeks have dates -- I'd have supported such a law when I was a teenager -- or the blame is really on the companies who sell and install the systems that are quite that fragile."
Look a few entries down at "A Little Love and Responsibility Goes a Long Way". Either Linus reads Blog Ho! or (and this is infinitely more probable) we were both inspired by the same imaginary alternative to our own awkward adolsence where computer geeks are babe magnets.
Thanks to my friend Allen for sending me the link to the article.
In unrelated blog news, I setup a MovableType blog for another project I'm working on. The install is somewhat confusing and I get the impression the package is more complicated overall than it needs to be. However, I like the template based system. It gives you complete control over layout and formatting and reduces the load on your server because the pages are rendered once and saved as HTML. I thought about trying greymatter, but given that I've already muddled through MT I'm going to stick with it.
A MovableType based Blog Ho! is coming soon!
