Last night The Screen Savers featured a 'dark tip' on a music site that seemed to good to be true - AllofMP3.com. They sell music at $0.01 per megabyte!
The Screen Savers crew also thought it was too good to be true, but they tried it out and said the selection and quality was great. The legality of the site is another question. The site is run out of Russia. Thier legalese basically says what they are doing is legal under the laws of the Russian Federation. Anyone using the service from outside the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation assumes responsibility for complying with applicable laws. This legal position sounds very similar to that used by online gambling sites.
I couldn't resist the temptation and forked over $10. I just bought a whole album for $0.857 (if the RIAA is reading this, it is an album I already own but the CD is scratched so I can't get a good rip).
This is what online music should be - cheap enough you can buy anything you want, in the format you want. The prices are about 90% less than iTunes and 80% less than wal-mart, but for the price and convenience I'm guessing demand is elastic enough to put the P2P services out of business and provide plenty of revenue to artists and producers.
Rock on, Comrade!
