The FBI used the US Patriot Act to obtain records from the ISP for the founder of the Stargate Information Acrive (here's thier story). It's not clear what charges were filed, my guess is something having to do with copyright violation for using the Stargate name, logos, and such. And no, they weren't selling bootleg DVDs - in fact, links from their site led to over $100,000 of DVD sales at Amazon.
Imagine the very worst case. The creators of the site are guilty and commited the most vile acts of copyright infringement. Is that a threat to national security? Is it worth forgoing constitutional protections from unreasonable search and seisure?
Removing judicial oversight from law enforcement in the form of the warrant system makes us all less safe, not more. Go write your congressional representitives today!
