"The future doesn't belong to fear; it belongs to freedom." Print E-mail

John Kerry spoke those words during his speech tonight at the Democratic National Convention. I can think of no better way to sum up the choice we face in the upcoming election.

Kerry has been criticized for waging an ambiguous and uninspired campaign. Before today the greater part of my support for his campaign stemmed from frustration with the current administration. Not any more. Kerry pulled off what was one of the best political speeches I have ever experienced. Tonight Kerry brought emotion, guiding principles, and a clear plan of action to the table.

A lot is at stake in this election, more than any other I have experienced in my life. This election isn't about who you think did better in the debate or party afiliation. This election is a referendum on what it means to be America. Is war a choice or last resort? Do we demand transparency and a free press to audit or leaders or accept their assertations and choices are in our best interests? Do we lead with a big stick or a round table? Do civil rights apply equally to all people even in times of war?

A friend of my wife's who is involved with Kerry's campaign went to the convention. On Monday she'll be back in town, I'm going to call her and volunteer to help with a political campaign for the first time in my life. Won't you join me?
