Yesterday I went to Target with my wife to buy a metal baker's rack for the kitchen, two of them actually. We found only one on the shelf and the great hunt for a Target employee began...
My wife suggested I use the red customer service phone to page someone to help. Figuring the phone would result in standing around for a half hour waiting for someone, I checked a few aisles in each direction hoping to get lucky and find someone to help. My prospects ran out and headed back to the phone.
The automated recording said, "If you would like someone to meet you where you are, press 1." I pressed one. Then the voice proclaimed, "Someone will be with you in 60 seconds or less." I almost started laughing, fully expecting to wait fifteen minutes or more. Before I hung up the phone someone was there.
Target has put together a system whereby a computer pages all target employees armed with walkie-talkies. The responding employee then reports they have "cleared" the event so other employees know not to respond. A good way to cover more ground with fewer people and provide better service at the same time, plus it's pretty cool.
