I was double checking the address of my local polling place in preperation for tomorrow when I came across the Davidson County Election Comission site proclaiming 126,971 votes already cast. There are only 424,855 people over the age of 18 in Davidson County. 30% of all eligable voters have already voted.
At first I thought, "Wow, that's a lot! The revolution has begun!" Then I did a little more digging - if 30% of eligable voters have voted the ratio must be even higher for registered voters must be higher because not all eligable voters are registered. I dug up the historical data and found a surprising statistic - Nashvillians are quite active voters!
62% of registered voters voted in the 2000 presidential election. That puts Nashville 11% above the average turnout in 2000 of 51%. Assuming the number of registered voters is about the same as 2000 (337,232), 38% of registered voters have already voted. If the reports of large numbers of new registrations are true, that number is somewhat lower. In any case, it looks like turnout is going to be big.
I'm going to take my digital camera to vote tomorrow, we'll see if I get any interesting shots. It was too dark when I got home to shoot the signs in my yard.
